Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) "Mole" Treatments
Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a skin condition characterized by mole-like lesions commonly found on the sides of the face, neck, chest, and back in both men and women. Frequently mistaken for moles, skin tags, and freckles, these benign growths vary in size and color, often merging to form larger lesions.
This condition is prevalent in individuals with Black, Latin, and Asian skin, and can be hereditary. Factors such as genetics, age, hormones, and sun exposure can influence their growth. DPN typically emerges in the mid-twenties, increasing in size and number with age. It is often associated with seborrheic keratosis (SK), another non-cancerous skin growth with a similar but larger appearance. Both DPN and SK can be treated using direct high-frequency methods.
DPN is an accumulation of melanin that grows on the epidermal layer of the skin, meaning they are not deep-rooted into the skin like moles. When properly identified, DPN and SK can be safely treated with a 99% success rate. Each lesion is treated individually using direct high-frequency. The appointment includes exactly 30 minutes to treat as many DPN and SK as possible. Therefore, additional appointments may be required. While existing DPN and SK can be treated once without return, it does not prevent new ones in other areas from growing.
Client safety and comfort are top priorities. After the skin is prepped, a topical lidocaine is applied to the desired areas. If you choose to leave certain DPN untreated, your wish is my command! Treated areas will have redness and swelling immediately after the treatment process. In the following days, lesions will darken and harden as they should before falling off naturally. The average healing time is 7-10 days on the face and 10-14 days on the body.
Treatments should be planned two weeks after extensive sun exposure and coordinated around big events. Makeup cannot be applied during the healing process. You can return to your normal skincare routine once all lesions have fallen off. Premature removal of lesions will result in hyper and/or hypopigmentation.
I cannot treat actual raised or flat moles (nevus). Nevi and other lesions I cannot treat or identify will be discussed during the consultation. If you desire to have moles removed, please visit a dermatologist.
